Dumbbell Chest-Supported Row
The Dumbbell Chest-Supported Row is an effective exercise for strengthening your back muscles while also training your shoulders and biceps. This exercise is unique because using a bench relieves the lower back and allows you to focus entirely on your back muscles.
Execution
-
1
Find a flat bench and place it at a slight incline.
-
2
Take a dumbbell in each hand and lie chest-down on the bench.
-
3
Let your arms hang straight down with the dumbbells touching the floor.
-
4
Pull the dumbbells up toward your hips while keeping your elbows close to your body.
-
5
Squeeze your shoulder blades together at the top and hold this position briefly.
-
6
Slowly and with control lower the dumbbells back to the starting position.
Benefits
- Strengthening the back muscles without loading the lower back.
- Improving posture by strengthening the shoulder blades and upper back.
- Increased shoulder stability.
Common Mistakes
- ! Performing the movement too quickly, resulting in a loss of control.
- ! Not fully squeezing the shoulder blades together, which leads to less effective training.
- ! Using weights that are too heavy, causing technique to deteriorate.
Target Muscles
This exercise primarily targets the major back muscles, such as the latissimus dorsi, rhomboids, and trapezius. The biceps and the backs of the shoulders (posterior deltoids) are also trained.
Possible Alternatives
- Change the bench angle to vary the intensity and focus on the back muscles.
- Use a barbell instead of dumbbells for a different grip and loading.
- Add a twisting movement at the end of the pull to engage the obliques and rotator cuff muscles more.
