Assisted Pull-Up – Wide Grip

The Assisted Pull-Up – Wide Grip is an excellent exercise for strengthening your upper body, particularly if you are not yet strong enough to perform a traditional pull-up. This variation uses a machine or resistance band for assistance, allowing you to complete the movement while gradually building strength.

Execution

  1. 1
Set the machine to the desired resistance level or attach a resistance band to a pull-up bar.
  2. 2
Grip the bar with a wide grip, with your hands positioned wider than shoulder-width apart.
  3. 3
Lower your body completely until your arms are straight.
  4. 4
Pull yourself up until your chin is above the bar while pulling your elbows down and back.
  5. 5
Slowly and controllably lower yourself back to the starting position.

Benefits

  • Improves the strength and size of the upper back and arms.
  • Helps develop proper pull-up technique.
  • Increases overall functional strength, which is useful for daily activities.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Moving up or down too quickly: Use a controlled movement to get the most out of the exercise.
  • ! Not fully extending: Make sure your arms are fully extended in the bottom position for maximum muscle activation.
  • ! Excessive swinging: Keep your body stable to avoid using momentum instead of muscular strength.

Target Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the latissimus dorsi, as well as the biceps, trapezius, and the muscles of the shoulder girdle.

Possible Alternatives

  • Traditional Pull-Up: Once you are strong enough, try replacing the assisted pull-up with the traditional variation.
  • Negative Pull-Ups: Focus on slowly and controllably lowering your body to build strength.
  • Chin-Ups: For another variation with greater emphasis on the biceps, try chin-ups with a narrower underhand grip.
