Scissors Kick

The Scissors Kick is a dynamic exercise that focuses on strengthening and defining your lower body, with particular emphasis on your abdominal muscles and the inner and outer thighs. This exercise is not only effective for building muscle, but also improves your coordination and balance.

Execution

  1. 1
Lie on your back on a comfortable surface, with your hands under your buttocks for support.
  2. 2
Lift your legs until they form an angle of approximately 45 degrees with the floor.
  3. 3
Begin crossing your legs over each other in a scissor motion: move one leg over the other, then switch sides.
  4. 4
Keep your abdominal muscles engaged throughout the exercise to protect your lower back.
  5. 5
Repeat the movement for the desired number of repetitions or duration.

Benefits

  • Strengthening the core muscles, contributing to better posture and reduced back pain.
  • Improved flexibility and mobility in the hips.
  • Increased coordination and balance through the continuous alternation of leg movements.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Failing to engage the abdominal muscles, which can lead to unnecessary strain on the lower back.
  • ! Lifting the legs too high or too low, which can reduce the effectiveness of the exercise.
  • ! Performing the movements too quickly, resulting in loss of control over the exercise.

Primary Muscles

The Scissors Kick primarily targets the rectus abdominis (the abdominal muscles), the adductors (inner thighs), and the abductors (outer thighs). The hip flexors and lower back are also lightly trained.

Possible Alternatives

  • For a less intense variation, lift one leg at a time while keeping the other on the floor.
  • To increase the intensity, you can add ankle weights or reduce the angle at which you lift your legs.
  • As an alternative for variety and an extra challenge, try flutter kicks, in which you move your legs quickly up and down without crossing them.
