Plank Shoulder Taps
The Plank Shoulder Tap is a dynamic variation of the traditional plank that not only improves your core stability but also challenges your coordination and balance. By adding the shoulder tap, you activate additional muscle groups, making the exercise even more effective.
Execution
-
1
Begin in a standard plank position with your hands directly under your shoulders and your body in a straight line from your head to your heels.
-
2
Engage your abdominal muscles to keep your body stable.
-
3
Lift one hand and tap the opposite shoulder with that hand.
-
4
Place your hand back down and repeat the movement with the other hand.
-
5
Keep your hips as still as possible throughout the exercise.
-
6
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.
Benefits
- Improves core stability and strength.
- Increases coordination and balance.
- Activates a wide range of muscle groups.
- May help improve posture.
Common Mistakes
- ! Allowing the hips to wobble excessively. Try to keep your body as still as possible.
- ! Holding the hips too high or too low. Make sure your body forms a straight line.
- ! Performing the movements too quickly. Focus on movement quality, not speed.
Primary Muscles
This exercise primarily targets the core muscles, including the rectus abdominis, obliques, and the deeper transversus abdominis. The shoulders, chest, and triceps are also trained through the movement and stabilization.
Possible Alternatives
- If the exercise is too challenging, try performing the plank on your knees instead of your toes.
- For an extra challenge, try performing Plank Shoulder Taps with your feet on an elevated surface.
- Add a push-up between each shoulder tap for a more intense workout.
