High Straight-Arm Plank
The High Straight-Arm Plank is an excellent exercise for improving core stability and strength. This variation of the traditional plank uses straight arms, providing a more intense challenge for your shoulders and upper back.
Execution:
- Begin in a standing position and bend forward until your hands touch the ground.
- Walk your hands forward until your body is fully extended in a plank position. Make sure your hands are directly beneath your shoulders.
- Keep your arms fully extended and your back straight, without letting your hips sag or pushing your buttocks upward.
- Engage your abdominal muscles and hold this position while breathing deeply.
- Try to hold this position for 30 seconds to one minute and gradually build up.
Key Muscles:
This exercise primarily targets the core muscles, including the rectus abdominis and the obliques. The shoulders, chest, and triceps are also trained due to the position of the arms.
Benefits:
The High Straight-Arm Plank helps improve overall core strength and stability. It also strengthens the shoulders and arms and may help improve your posture.
Common Mistakes:
- Letting the hips sag, which leads to unnecessary strain on the lower back.
- Pushing the buttocks upward, which reduces the effectiveness of the exercise.
- Not engaging the core, resulting in a less stable plank and reduced effectiveness.
Possible Alternatives:
- If the High Straight-Arm Plank is too challenging, you can start with a traditional plank on your elbows.
- To increase the intensity, try lifting one leg while in the plank position.
- Add a side rotation to engage the obliques more.
