Headstand
The Headstand, also known as the headstand, is an impressive yoga pose that tests not only your balance but also your strength. It is an exercise in which you literally stand on your head, with your body extended straight upward. This pose offers unique benefits such as improving blood circulation to your head and strengthening your shoulders, arms, and core.
Execution
-
1
Begin on your knees and place your hands on the floor, fingers spread, directly in front of you.
-
2
Bend forward and place the crown of your head on the floor, so that your head and hands form a triangle.
-
3
Lift your knees off the floor and walk your feet toward you, as close to your face as possible.
-
4
Use your core to lift your legs, first into a bent position and then straight upward.
-
5
Keep your body straight and your muscles engaged. Stay in this position for a few breaths.
-
6
To come out of the pose, slowly lower your legs and return to the starting position.
Benefits
In addition to improving blood circulation and strengthening the muscle groups mentioned above, the headstand also helps improve your balance and focus. It may also help reduce stress and promote a sense of mental clarity.
Common Mistakes
- ! Too much pressure on the neck: Make sure you distribute the force evenly between your head and arms.
- ! Coming up too quickly: Take your time getting into the pose; this helps prevent injuries.
- ! Loss of control: Focus on your core to maintain stability and avoid falling over.
Primary Muscles
The headstand primarily works the shoulders, arms, and core muscles. It also requires strength and stability from the back and neck muscles to maintain the pose correctly.
Possible Alternatives
If the headstand is too challenging, begin with a supported headstand against a wall or try Dolphin Pose to build strength in your shoulders and arms. Another option is the Tripod Headstand, in which you rest your knees on your elbows for additional support.
