Execution

  1. 1
Begin in a plank position with your feet hip-width apart and a dumbbell in each hand. Make sure your hands are positioned directly under your shoulders.
  2. 2
Engage your core and keep your body in a straight line from your head to your heels.
  3. 3
Lift one arm out to the side until it is in line with your shoulder while holding the dumbbell. Rotate your torso slightly with the movement, but keep your hips as stable as possible.
  4. 4
Slowly and controllably lower your arm back to the starting position.
  5. 5
Repeat the movement with the other arm.
  6. 6
Perform 2–3 sets of 8–12 repetitions per arm, depending on your fitness level.

Benefits

The Dumbbell Plank T-Lift helps build functional strength, improves core stability, and increases muscular endurance. Adding a weighted lift to the plank makes the exercise more challenging and stimulates muscle growth and definition.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Letting the hips drop: Make sure your body remains in a straight line throughout the exercise to maximize effectiveness and prevent injuries.
  • ! Moving too quickly: Perform the lift slowly and controllably to maximally activate the muscles.
  • ! Using weights that are too heavy: Start with lighter weights to ensure proper form and prevent overloading the muscles.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the core muscles, including the rectus abdominis, obliques, and deeper transversus abdominis. It also trains the deltoids, trapezius, and the muscles in the upper and lower arms.

Possible Alternatives

If the Dumbbell Plank T-Lift is too challenging, you can start with a regular plank or a side plank to improve your core stability. For an additional challenge, try the exercise on an unstable surface such as a Bosu ball or add more weight to the dumbbells.
