Crunch (Straight Leg Up)

The crunch with straight legs raised is an effective abdominal exercise that targets the core muscles while also improving flexibility in the legs. This variation of the traditional crunch adds an extra challenge by keeping your legs vertical, providing a more intense abdominal workout.

Execution

  1. 1
Lie on your back on a mat, with your hands behind your head and your legs extended straight upward.
  2. 2
Inhale and engage your abdominal muscles.
  3. 3
As you exhale, lift your upper body off the floor into a crunch while keeping your legs straight.
  4. 4
Hold this position briefly, then slowly lower yourself back to the starting position.
  5. 5
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Strengthens and defines the abdominal muscles.
  • Improves posture by strengthening the core muscles.
  • Increases leg flexibility through the extended position.
  • May help reduce back pain through a stronger core.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Pulling on your neck instead of using your abdominal muscles to lift your upper body. Make sure your hands support your head without applying pressure.
  • ! Allowing your legs to lower during the exercise, which reduces its effectiveness. Try to keep your legs straight and stable.
  • ! Performing the movements too quickly. Focus on quality over quantity and perform each crunch slowly and with control.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the rectus abdominis (the “six-pack” muscles) and the obliques (side abdominal muscles). The hip flexors and, to a lesser extent, the muscles in the legs are also engaged.

Possible Alternatives

  • If the exercise is too challenging, try the traditional crunch with your feet flat on the floor.
  • For an extra challenge, try holding a weight on your chest while performing the crunch.
  • Perform the exercise on a stability ball to increase the difficulty and engage more core muscles.
