Crunch (On Bosu Ball)
The crunch on a Bosu ball is a dynamic exercise that focuses on strengthening your core. Due to the unstable surface of the Bosu ball, your muscles are challenged more, leading to a more effective workout.
Execution
-
1
Begin by lying on your back on the Bosu ball, with your buttocks close to the edge of the ball. Make sure your lower back maintains good contact with the ball.
-
2
Place your feet flat on the floor, with your knees bent.
-
3
Cross your arms over your chest or place them lightly behind your ears, without pulling on your neck.
-
4
Inhale, then lift your upper body off the ball by tightening your abdominal muscles. Keep your lower back in contact with the ball.
-
5
Exhale as you come up, but do not come all the way to a seated position. Your shoulders should come off the ball.
-
6
Slowly lower yourself back down to the starting position.
Benefits
- Improves core stability through the unstable surface.
- Increases the intensity of the traditional crunch, which can lead to faster results.
- Helps develop a strong, toned abdomen.
Common Mistakes
- ! Pulling on the neck instead of using the abdominal muscles to lift.
- ! Moving up and down too quickly, resulting in a loss of control.
- ! Not lowering all the way down, which prevents the abdominal muscles from being fully trained.
Main Muscles
This exercise primarily targets the rectus abdominis (the “six-pack” muscles) and the obliques (the side abdominal muscles). The deeper core muscles are also trained for stability.
Possible Alternatives
- For a lighter variation, perform the crunch without the Bosu ball, simply on the floor.
- To increase the intensity, hold a weight on your chest while performing the crunches.
- You can also try the twist crunch on the Bosu ball to target the obliques more.
