Crunch (Hands Overhead)
The crunch with the hands overhead is an effective abdominal exercise that focuses on strengthening and toning your core. Keeping your hands overhead during the crunch increases the challenge and intensity of the exercise, leading to greater strength and definition in your abdominal muscles.
Execution
-
1
Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.
-
2
Extend your arms straight overhead, with your hands together.
-
3
Inhale and prepare to move.
-
4
Exhale as you lift your upper body off the floor by engaging your abdominal muscles. Keep your hands overhead.
-
5
Pause briefly at the top of the movement, then inhale as you slowly return to the starting position.
Benefits
- Improves core stability and strength.
- Helps create a defined abdomen.
- May improve posture by strengthening the core.
- Increases the flexibility and range of motion of the spine.
Common Mistakes
- ! Pulling on the neck: Avoid pulling on your neck or head with your hands. Focus on using your abdominal muscles to lift your upper body.
- ! Moving too quickly: Perform the movement in a controlled, slow manner to achieve maximum muscle activation.
- ! Not moving fully: Make sure your upper body lifts sufficiently off the floor to train your abdominal muscles effectively.
Targeted Muscles
This exercise primarily targets the rectus abdominis (the “six-pack” muscles) and the obliques (the sides of the abdomen). The deeper core muscles, such as the transversus abdominis, are also engaged.
Possible Alternatives
- To reduce the intensity, perform the exercise without keeping your hands overhead, placing them by your sides or on your chest instead.
- For a greater challenge, try holding a weight or medicine ball in your hands while performing the crunch.
- Alternatively, you can also add leg raises to the crunch for a full core workout.
