Crunch (Arms Straight)
The straight-arm crunch is an effective abdominal exercise that targets core strengthening. Keeping your arms straight throughout the exercise increases the intensity and challenges your abdominal muscles further.
Execution
-
1
Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.
-
2
Extend your arms straight above you, parallel to the floor.
-
3
Engage your abdominal muscles and lift your shoulders and upper back off the floor. Keep your arms straight.
-
4
Hold this position briefly, then slowly lower yourself back to the starting position.
-
5
Repeat the movement for the desired number of repetitions.
Benefits
- Strengthens the core, which can lead to better posture and less back pain.
- Improves the body's stability and balance.
- Improves performance in other physical activities through a stronger core.
Common Mistakes
- ! Pulling on your neck or head with your hands. Keep your neck in a neutral position.
- ! Performing the movement too quickly. Focus on the quality of the movement, not the speed.
- ! Not lowering yourself all the way down. Make sure your shoulders touch the floor between repetitions.
Primary Muscles
This exercise primarily targets the rectus abdominis and the obliques. The muscles in your lower back and hips are also engaged lightly.
Possible Alternatives
- Bent-arm crunch: Crossing your arms over your chest instead of keeping them straight lowers the intensity of the exercise.
- Bicycle crunches: A more dynamic variation that also targets the obliques more intensely.
- Plank: If you are looking for an exercise that places less impact on your back while still strengthening your core.
