Benefits

  • Strengthens and defines the side abdominal muscles.
  • Helps prevent back pain by strengthening the core.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Moving through the exercises too quickly: take the time to fully feel the stretch on each side.
  • ! Not warming up sufficiently: make sure your body is properly warmed up before performing this stretch.
  • ! Stretching too far: listen to your body and do not force the movement beyond your comfort zone.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the obliques, but also benefits the rectus abdominis and the muscles along the spine.

Possible Alternatives

  • To increase the intensity, you can hold a light dumbbell in your hand while performing the stretch.
  • For a less intensive variation, you can perform the movement without fully lifting your upper body, simply reaching toward the sides from a lying position.
