Begin in a standard plank position with your hands directly under your shoulders and your body in a straight line from your head to your heels.
  2. 2
Step your right foot forward and place it next to your right hand in a lunge position.
  3. 3
Return to the plank position and repeat the movement with your left foot.
  4. 4
Continue alternating between right and left for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

The Alternating Plank Lunge helps build strength in the aforementioned muscle groups, improves flexibility in the hips and legs, and increases stability and balance. It is also an excellent exercise for improving your overall body posture and may help reduce back pain.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Hips too high: Make sure your body remains in a straight line during the plank. Hips that are too high reduce the effectiveness of the exercise.
  • ! Performing the movement too quickly: Perform the movement in a controlled manner to get the most out of the exercise and prevent injuries.
  • ! Not fully extending: Make sure you fully extend your leg in the lunge position for maximum muscle activation.

Targeted Muscles

This exercise targets the core muscles, including the abdominals and lower back, as well as the glutes, quadriceps, hamstrings, and the muscles in your shoulders and arms.

Possible Alternatives

To adjust the intensity, consider the following variations:

  • Elevated Plank Lunge: Place your hands on an elevated surface such as a bench to make the exercise less intense.
  • Jumping Plank Lunge: Add a jump when switching legs for a more intensive cardiovascular workout.
