Alternating Leg Downward Dog
Alternating Leg Downward Dog is a dynamic variation of the traditional Downward Dog yoga pose that improves both flexibility and strength. Alternately lifting your legs adds an extra element of balance and strength to the exercise, creating a unique challenge.
Execution
-
1
Begin in a standard Downward Dog position, with your hands and feet on the floor and your hips pushed upward so that your body forms an inverted V shape.
-
2
Make sure your hands are shoulder-width apart and your feet are hip-width apart.
-
3
Inhale and lift your right leg as high as possible while keeping your hips high and your shoulders stable.
-
4
Exhale and return your right leg to the starting position.
-
5
Repeat this movement with your left leg.
-
6
Alternate between your right and left legs for the desired number of repetitions.
Benefits
Alternating Leg Downward Dog helps improve overall body strength, flexibility, and balance. It is also an excellent exercise for relieving stress and tension in the shoulders and lower back.
Common Mistakes
- ! Too much pressure on the arms: Make sure to keep your hips high to reduce the pressure on your arms.
- ! Rotating the hips: Try to keep your hips parallel to the floor when lifting your leg.
- ! Overextending: If you find it difficult to maintain your balance, do not lift your leg as high.
Target Muscles
This exercise targets the hamstrings, glute muscles, shoulders, and arms. It also improves core stability through the balance component of the exercise.
Possible Alternatives
If Alternating Leg Downward Dog is too challenging, try holding the standard Downward Dog without the leg lifts. For more of a challenge, you can try lifting your opposite arm and leg simultaneously.
