Execution

  1. 1
Sit on the floor with your knees bent and your feet in the air. Hold a dumbbell with both hands in front of your chest.
  2. 2
Lean back slightly so that your upper body forms an angle of approximately 45 degrees with the floor. Lift your feet slightly off the floor for an additional balance challenge.
  3. 3
Rotate your torso to the right and bring the dumbbell to the floor beside you. Make sure the movement comes from your waist, not your arms.
  4. 4
Then rotate to the left and bring the dumbbell to the floor on the other side.
  5. 5
Continue alternating this movement for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Strengthens the core and improves torso stability.
  • Helps develop better balance and coordination.
  • Improves the flexibility and mobility of the spine.
  • May contribute to better posture and reduced back pain.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Rotating too quickly: Focus on the quality of the movement rather than the speed. A slower, controlled movement is more effective.
  • ! Not keeping your back straight: Make sure your back remains straight throughout the exercise to prevent injuries.
  • ! Using a dumbbell that is too heavy: Start with a lighter weight to ensure proper form and prevent overloading.

Key Muscles

The Dumbbell Russian Twist primarily trains the oblique muscles, but the entire core, including the deep abdominal muscles and lower back, is also engaged. In addition, the shoulders and arms are lightly trained by holding and maneuvering the dumbbell.

Possible Alternatives

  • Without weight: Perform the Russian Twist without a dumbbell if you are new to this exercise or want to focus on technique.
  • With a medicine ball: For a different variation and weight distribution, you can use a medicine ball instead of a dumbbell.
  • Feet on the floor: If lifting your feet is too challenging, keep them on the floor for greater stability.
