Cable Twist
The Cable Twist is a dynamic exercise that targets strengthening and defining your core, with a particular focus on the obliques. This exercise offers a unique combination of strength training and flexibility that not only helps you build a strong midsection, but also improves your overall posture and balance.
Execution
-
1
Set the cable machine to mid-height and attach a single handle to the cable.
-
2
Stand sideways to the machine with your feet shoulder-width apart. Grip the handle with both hands, keeping your hands together.
-
3
With your arms extended, rotate your torso away from the machine while keeping your hips and legs stable. Make sure the movement comes from your waist.
-
4
Slowly rotate back to the starting position and repeat the movement for the desired number of repetitions. Switch sides to complete the exercise.
Benefits
- Strengthens and defines the obliques.
- Improves core stability and balance.
- Helps prevent back pain through a stronger core.
- Improves the flexibility and range of motion of the spine.
Common Mistakes
- ! Rotating too quickly: Use a controlled movement to train the muscles effectively and prevent injuries.
- ! Using too much weight: This can lead to poor form and increase the risk of injury. Start light and increase gradually.
- ! Moving the hips: Keep your hips and legs stable to maintain the focus on the core.
Primary Muscles
The Cable Twist primarily targets the obliques, but also trains the deep core muscles, the transversus abdominis, and, to a lesser extent, the back and shoulder muscles.
Possible Alternatives
- Russian twist with a medicine ball for a more accessible variation without equipment.
- Plank with a twist for an exercise that requires no equipment and also trains the obliques.
