Execution

  1. 1
Begin by placing your feet shoulder-width apart and keeping your knees slightly bent.
  2. 2
Bend forward from your hips until your upper body is almost parallel to the floor. Let your arms hang straight down.
  3. 3
Inhale and rotate your torso to the right while bringing your right arm up and out to the side in a smooth motion.
  4. 4
Return to the center as you exhale and repeat the movement to the left.
  5. 5
Perform 2–3 sets of 10–12 repetitions, alternating between the right and left sides.

Benefits

The Bent-Over Twist helps improve core stability and strengthens the muscles around your spine, which may contribute to better posture and less back pain. It also improves your balance and coordination, which can be beneficial for both daily activities and other sports.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Moving too quickly: Focus on the quality of the movement rather than the speed to get the most out of the exercise.
  • ! Rotating too far: Do not rotate your torso farther than is comfortable to avoid overloading your back.
  • ! Not keeping your back straight: Make sure your back is straight during the exercise to maximize its effectiveness and prevent injuries.

Target Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the obliques, rectus abdominis (the visible "six-pack" muscles), transversus abdominis (the deep abdominal muscles), and the muscles in the lower back. The shoulders and arms are also lightly trained by the movement.

Possible Alternatives

If you want to adjust the intensity of the Bent-Over Twist, you can consider adding weights in your hands for extra resistance. Another variation is to perform the exercise while sitting on an exercise ball, which emphasizes balance and stability.
