Execution

  1. 1
Find a hyperextension bench and place a dumbbell between your feet if you want to add extra resistance.
  2. 2
Lie face down on the bench with your ankles secured under the foot pads.
  3. 3
Start with your body in a straight line, parallel to the floor.
  4. 4
Inhale and slowly bend at the waist as you lower your upper body. Keep your back straight and your head in a neutral position.
  5. 5
Exhale as you raise your upper body back to the starting position, using the strength of your lower back.

Benefits

  • Strengthening the lower back, which may help prevent back pain.
  • Improved posture by strengthening the muscles that support your spine.
  • Increased flexibility in the hips and lower back.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Performing the movement too quickly, which can result in less effective training and an increased risk of injury.
  • ! Not bending fully downward, which reduces the effectiveness of the exercise.
  • ! Failing to keep your back straight, which can cause unnecessary strain and possible injuries.

Key Muscles

The primary focus is on the erector spinae, the muscle group that runs along your spine. Your hamstrings and glutes are also engaged to a lesser extent.

Possible Alternatives

  • If you do not have access to a hyperextension bench, try a similar movement on a stability ball.
  • For lower intensity, perform the exercise without a dumbbell.
  • Increase the intensity by increasing the weight of the dumbbell.
