One-Arm Dumbbell Row

The One-Arm Dumbbell Row is an effective exercise for strengthening and developing your back muscles. This exercise primarily targets the latissimus dorsi, but also engages the biceps and shoulders. The unique benefit of this exercise is that you train each side of your body separately, which helps correct muscle imbalances.

Execution

  1. 1
Place your right knee and right hand on a bench. Ensure that your back is parallel to the floor.
  2. 2
Grip a dumbbell with your left hand and let it hang with your arm extended.
  3. 3
Pull the dumbbell upward toward your hip while keeping your elbow close to your body. Ensure that your elbow does not flare outward.
  4. 4
Lower the dumbbell slowly and under control to the starting position.
  5. 5
Repeat the movement for the desired number of repetitions, then switch sides.

Benefits

This exercise helps improve symmetry between the left and right sides of your back. It not only strengthens your back but also improves core stability and supports shoulder health.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Not keeping your back straight: Ensure that your back remains straight and parallel to the floor throughout the exercise.
  • ! Allowing your elbow to flare too far outward: Keep your elbow close to your body to maintain focus on your back muscles.
  • ! Lowering the dumbbell too quickly: Lower the dumbbell under control to make the muscles work as much as possible.

Primary Muscles

The primary muscle group trained with the One-Arm Dumbbell Row is the latissimus dorsi. The trapezius, rhomboids, and rear deltoids are also engaged. Your biceps and forearm muscles also contribute during the exercise.

Possible Alternatives

If you want to adjust the intensity of the exercise, you can vary the weight of the dumbbell. Beginners may benefit from starting with a lighter weight. Advanced athletes can increase the weight to make the exercise more challenging. Another variation is performing the exercise with a resistance band instead of a dumbbell.
