  • Modified Curl Up

The Modified Curl Up is a safe and effective way to strengthen your core without placing unnecessary pressure on your lower back. This exercise is ideal if you are just starting core training or recovering from an injury.

Execution:

  1. Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.
  2. Place your hands under your lower back to support it.
  3. Engage your abdominal muscles by drawing your navel toward your spine.
  4. Slowly lift your head and shoulders off the floor without straining your lower back.
  5. Hold this position for a few seconds, then slowly lower yourself back to the starting position.
  6. Repeat the exercise for the desired number of repetitions.

Important Muscles:

  • Rectus Abdominis (the “six-pack” muscle)
  • Obliques (side abdominal muscles)
  • Transversus Abdominis (deep abdominal muscles)

Benefits:

  • Strengthens the core without straining the lower back.
  • Helps improve posture and balance.
  • May reduce back pain through a stronger supporting core.

Common Mistakes:

  • Performing the movement too quickly, which prevents the muscles from being used optimally.
  • Straining the neck by pushing the head upward with the hands.
  • Allowing the lower back to lift away from the hands, which can strain the lower back.

Possible Alternatives:

  • If you want more of a challenge, try the traditional curl-up without placing your hands under your lower back.
  • For lower intensity, place a folded towel under your head to support your neck.
  • Use a stability ball to make the exercise more challenging and engage the stabilizing muscles more.
