The Commando Pull-Up is a dynamic exercise that targets multiple muscle groups at once. This variation of the traditional pull-up adds a unique twist by rotating your body sideways, providing a more intense workout.

Execution

  1. 1
Begin by gripping a pull-up bar with both hands, keeping your hands close together rather than apart. Your body should hang straight.
  2. 2
Pull yourself up while rotating your body to one side, so that your shoulder nearly touches the bar.
  3. 3
Slowly and controllably lower yourself back to the starting position.
  4. 4
Repeat the movement, but rotate your body to the other side this time.
  5. 5
    Alternate sides with each repetition.

Benefits

  • Improves grip strength through the unique hand position.
  • Increases muscle activation in the back and arms through the rotational movement.
  • Helps develop symmetrical muscle growth by alternating the rotation.
  • Strengthens the core through the stabilization required during the exercise.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Not lowering all the way down: Make sure your arms are fully extended in the starting position for maximum muscle activation.
  • ! Moving too quickly: Perform the exercise slowly and controllably to maximize effectiveness and prevent injuries.
  • ! Incorrect breathing: Exhale while pulling yourself up and inhale while lowering back to the starting position.

Primary Muscles

The Commando Pull-Up primarily trains the back muscles, biceps, shoulders, and core. The unique rotational movement engages these muscles differently than a standard pull-up.

Possible Alternatives

  • If the Commando Pull-Up is too challenging, start with a standard pull-up or use an assistance band to help you pull yourself up.
  • For an extra challenge, try the exercise with a weighted vest or by holding a dumbbell between your feet.
  • Other variations, such as the chin-up or wide-grip pull-up, can also be used to diversify your workout.
