Russian Twists
The Russian Twist is a dynamic exercise that focuses on strengthening your core, with special emphasis on the oblique muscles. This exercise is not only effective for building strength, but also improves your balance and stability.
Execution
-
1
Sit on the floor with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.
-
2
Lean back slightly until you feel an angle of approximately 45 degrees in your torso.
-
3
Lift your feet slightly off the floor for an extra challenge.
-
4
Hold your hands together in front of your chest and rotate your torso to the right, bringing your hands to the floor beside your hip.
-
5
Rotate back to the center and repeat the movement to the left.
-
6
Continue alternating this movement for the desired number of repetitions.
Benefits
- Strengthens the core and improves torso stability.
- Helps improve balance and coordination.
- May contribute to better posture and reduced back pain.
- Increases the flexibility and mobility of the spine.
Common Mistakes
- ! Twisting too quickly: Focus on the quality of the movement rather than the speed.
- ! Not keeping your back straight: Make sure your back is straight and not rounded during the exercise.
- ! Ignoring your breathing: Exhale when twisting and inhale when returning to the center.
Primary Muscles
The Russian Twist primarily targets the oblique muscles, but also trains the rectus abdominis (the "six-pack" muscles), the lower back, and, to a lesser extent, the hip flexors.
Possible Alternatives
- To reduce the intensity, keep your feet on the floor.
- For higher intensity, hold a weight or medicine ball in your hands while twisting.
- Try the exercise on a balance ball for an extra challenge to your stability.
