Looking for an exercise that improves your balance while training multiple muscle groups at the same time? Try the Diagonal Arm and Leg Lift. This exercise is ideal for strengthening your core while also working your back, glutes, and shoulder muscles.
Execution:
- Begin on your hands and knees with your hands directly under your shoulders and your knees under your hips.
- Engage your abdominal muscles to stabilize your spine.
- At the same time, extend one arm forward and the opposite leg backward. Make sure your arm and leg are aligned with your body.
- Hold this position for a few seconds and focus on your balance.
- Slowly return to the starting position and repeat the movement with the other arm and leg.
- Perform several repetitions per side.
Key Muscles:
- Core (abdominal muscles and lower back)
- Gluteus (gluteal muscles)
- Deltoid muscles (shoulders)
- Hamstrings (back of the thighs)
Benefits:
- Improves coordination and balance
- Strengthens multiple muscle groups at the same time
- Helps develop a strong and stable core
- May help reduce back pain by strengthening the lower back
Common Mistakes:
- Moving too quickly: Take your time with each repetition to maintain full control.
- Rotating your hips: Keep your hips parallel to the floor to train the correct muscles.
- Arching your back: Keep your back straight and your core engaged.
Possible Alternatives:
- If the full Diagonal Arm and Leg Lift is too challenging, start by lifting only your arm or only your leg.
- To increase the intensity, you can add an ankle or wrist weight.
- Try performing the movement more slowly or holding the position longer for an additional challenge.
