Execution

  1. 1
Lie on your back with your hands behind your head and your elbows wide apart.
  2. 2
Lift your shoulders slightly off the floor and bring your right elbow toward your left knee while straightening your right leg.
  3. 3
Return to the starting position and repeat the movement with your left elbow and right knee.
  4. 4
Continue alternating this movement for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

In addition to strengthening your core, the Criss-Cross Elbow-to-Knee Crunch helps improve your posture and may reduce back pain by strengthening the muscles around your spine. The twisting movement also stimulates digestion and may help reduce abdominal fat.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Moving too quickly: Take your time with each repetition to ensure maximum muscle activation.
  • ! Pulling on the neck: Keep your hands lightly behind your head without pulling on your neck.
  • ! Not twisting fully: Make sure you actually bring your elbow toward your knee for a full rotation.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the rectus abdominis (the abdominal muscles) and the obliques (side muscles). It also engages the deeper core muscles and the stabilizers around the hips and lower back.

Possible Alternatives

If you want to adjust the intensity of the exercise, you can consider adding leg raises or using a fitness ball for extra stability and resistance. For beginners, it may help to keep the feet on the floor and perform only the upper-body rotation.
