Execution

  1. 1
Set the cable machine to mid-height and attach a handle to the cable.
  2. 2
Stand sideways to the machine with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  3. 3
Grip the handle with both hands, arms extended, and rotate your torso so that you are facing the machine.
  4. 4
Brace your core and rotate your upper body away from the machine while pulling the handle diagonally downward toward your opposite hip.
  5. 5
Slowly and in a controlled manner return to the starting position.
  6. 6
Repeat the movement for the desired number of repetitions before switching sides.

Benefits

  • Improves rotational strength and spinal flexibility.
  • Helps build a strong, stabilized core, which is essential for everyday movements and other sports.
  • Increases muscle definition in the abdominal area.
  • May help reduce waist circumference and improve posture.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Moving too quickly: Focus on a slow, controlled movement to achieve maximum muscle activation.
  • ! Using weights that are too heavy: This can lead to poor form and possible injury. Start light and increase the weight gradually.
  • ! Not rotating fully: Make sure you perform a full rotational movement for optimal muscle activation.

Target Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the obliques, but also engages the entire core, including the rectus abdominis and the deeper transversus abdominis muscles. The shoulders and upper back are also lightly trained through the movement and stabilization.

Possible Alternatives

  • Without a machine: Use a resistance band attached to a fixed point at mid-height.
  • Standing Cable Wood Chop: For a variation that places more emphasis on the upper obliques.
  • Russian Twist: A floor exercise that also trains the obliques, but without the need for equipment.
