  • Bird Dog - Instructions Voiceover

The Bird Dog is an excellent exercise for improving core stability, balance, and coordination. This exercise also helps strengthen the back and abdominal muscles while promoting flexibility in the lower back.

Execution:

  1. Start on your hands and knees on a mat, with your knees under your hips and your hands directly under your shoulders.
  2. Engage your abdominal muscles to keep your back stable.
  3. Simultaneously extend one arm forward and the opposite leg backward. Make sure your hand and foot are at the same height as your back.
  4. Hold this position for a few seconds and focus on balance and stability.
  5. Slowly return to the starting position and switch sides.
  6. Repeat the exercise several times on both sides.

Primary Muscles:

The Bird Dog primarily targets the rectus abdominis, erector spinae (muscles along your spine), gluteus maximus (gluteal muscles), and deltoids (shoulder muscles).

Benefits:

This exercise not only improves core strength and stability but also helps improve your posture and may reduce back pain by strengthening the muscles around your spine.

Common Mistakes:

  • Holding your head too high or too low; your head should be aligned with your spine.
  • Letting your hips sag; keep your hips parallel to the mat to maintain proper form.
  • Moving too quickly; perform the movements slowly and in a controlled manner to achieve maximum benefits.

Possible Alternatives:

  • To increase the intensity, you can add an ankle weight to the leg you extend.
  • For beginners, the exercise can be simplified by extending only the leg or only the arm.
