Execution

  1. 1
Start by placing the barbell on the floor in front of you while kneeling. Make sure your knees are resting on a comfortable surface.
  2. 2
Grip the barbell with both hands shoulder-width apart.
  3. 3
Engage your core and slowly roll the barbell forward while keeping your hips, back, and arms straight.
  4. 4
Roll out as far as possible without letting your back sag or losing control.
  5. 5
Use your core to pull the barbell back toward you and return to the starting position.

Benefits

  • Improves core stability and strength.
  • Helps develop a strong and stable back.
  • Increases overall body strength, especially in the upper-body muscles.
  • May contribute to better posture and reduced back pain.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Rolling out too far before developing the necessary strength and stability, which can lead to back pain or injuries.
  • ! Allowing the back to sag during the exercise, which increases pressure on the lower back.
  • ! Failing to control your breathing properly; make sure to exhale while rolling out and inhale when returning to the starting position.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily trains the rectus abdominis (the abdominal muscles) and the obliques (side abdominal muscles), but the muscles in your lower back, shoulders, chest, and hip flexors are also engaged.

Possible Alternatives

  • Ab Wheel Rollout: A similar exercise performed with an ab wheel instead of a barbell.
  • Stability Ball Rollout: For beginners, using a stability ball can help adjust the intensity and learn the movement.
  • TRX Fallout: Another variation that challenges core stability using TRX straps.
