Abdominal Crunches With Hold
Do you want to strengthen your core and work toward a tighter abdomen? Then abdominal crunches with a hold are an excellent choice. This variation on the traditional crunch adds an isometric hold at the end of the movement, making your abdominal muscles work harder. This not only strengthens the muscles but may also help improve your posture.
Execution
-
1
Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.
-
2
Place your hands behind your head without pulling on your neck.
-
3
Exhale and lift your upper body off the floor by engaging your abdominal muscles. Make sure your lower back remains on the floor.
-
4
Hold your position briefly at the top of the movement. Engage your abdominal muscles extra during this hold.
-
5
Inhale and slowly lower yourself back to the starting position.
Benefits
By adding a hold at the end of each crunch, you increase the time under tension for your abdominal muscles. This leads to greater muscular endurance and strength. In addition, this exercise may help reduce back pain by strengthening your core, providing better support for your spine.
Common Mistakes
- ! Pulling on the neck: Make sure your hands support your head without pulling on your neck.
- ! Performing the movement too quickly: Perform the movement in a controlled manner and focus on engaging your abdominal muscles.
- ! Lifting the lower back off the floor: Keep your lower back on the floor to maximize the effectiveness of the exercise and prevent injuries.
Primary Muscles
This exercise primarily targets the rectus abdominis, or the abdominal muscles. The obliques and the deeper core muscles, such as the transversus abdominis, are also trained.
Possible Alternatives
If you want to adjust the intensity of the exercise, you can vary the length of the hold or the number of repetitions. For beginners, reducing the hold time or the number of repetitions can help gradually build strength. Advanced exercisers can extend the hold time or add extra weight, for example by holding a weight plate on the chest, to make the exercise more challenging.
