No clients as a new coach? How to get your first 5 without an ad budget
90% of starting online coaches quit within a year. Not because they are bad at their profession, but because they do not know how to get their first clients.
The solution is less complicated than you think. You do not need a large following, an ad budget or a fancy website to find your first clients for your online coaching or PT business.
In this article, you will read three strategies that work, even if you are just starting out. No theory, but concrete steps you can take today.
1. Your first clients are already in your phone
Your network is your fastest and most underestimated sales channel. The people who already know you already trust you. And creating trust is the hardest part of a purchase.
Scroll through your contacts. Send a personal message. Call people. Also send a DM to people you have not spoken to in a long time. Explain clearly what you offer and who you help.
The more people know that you are now available as a coach or PT, the greater the chance that someone will buy your service, or knows someone who would want to.
Use this message as a starting point
"Hey [name]! I have started as an [online coach / personal trainer] and help [target audience] with [result]. I am looking for my first clients and thought of you because [personalize based on the person]. Could this be something for you? Or do you know someone I could help?"
Personal, direct and without sales pressure. That works better than any ad message.
2. Posting content costs nothing and brings in leads
Content is a free alternative to paid advertising. You share what you know, people get to know you, and some of them eventually become clients.
You do not need to go viral. You only need to be visible to the right people. Post about your knowledge, your approach and your life as a coach or PT. The more specific you are, the better.
Ideas to start with:
- A common mistake you see beginners in your niche make
- What you have learned or experienced yourself (personal story)
- A short tip someone can apply today
- A question you often get from potential clients
- Your daily routine or way of working as a coach
Run your fitness business with more structure
- Planning, member management and coaching in one platform
- Built for coaches, studios and gyms
- Fewer separate tools, more overview
Which platform should you choose?
Choose a platform that fits your target audience. Instagram and TikTok work well for coaches who sell lifestyle and fitness. LinkedIn is stronger if you coach business clients or companies.
Start with one platform. Once you are consistently posting good content on that platform, you can start on another platform. It is better to post genuinely good content on one platform than average content on five platforms.
3. Every new follower is a potential client, so approach them that way
This is the step most coaches skip. They wait for followers to contact them on their own. But that is not how it works.
Someone who follows you does so for a reason. They are interested in what you share, and that makes them a warm lead: someone who has already taken a step in your direction.
Send them a message. Not with a sales pitch, but with a real question. Start a conversation and find out what is on their mind.
This is how you start the conversation
"Hey [name], nice that you started following me! I am curious: what brought you to my page? What are you looking for right now?"
Listen to the answer. Ask follow-up questions. And when the moment is right, explain what you can do for them. No script, just a real conversation.
The coaches who do this consistently fill their practice faster than those who only post and wait.
Your first 5 clients are closer than you think
Actively use your network, post consistently and personally follow up with new followers. Three steps that require no budget, but will create results.
Most starting coaches wait for clients to come by themselves. You are going to approach them actively. That difference determines who builds a successful coaching practice and who drops out.
