Last night, Under Armour, the company behind MyFitnessPal, informed its users of a data breach in MyFitnessPal. According to Under Armour, malicious actors were able to access the data of 150 million users, and the advice is therefore to change the password for MyFitnessPal as soon as possible.
MyFitnessPal data breach
The data breach was discovered 4 days ago, last Sunday, by the fitness app builder but occurred earlier. Last month, in February 2018, hackers were able to access the database of the 150 million users through the outdated sha-1 encryption, which contained, among other things, usernames and passwords. The payment details and other account information were not compromised in this hack.
MyFitnessPal via Facebook
If you log in to MyFitnessPal via Facebook, you have less to worry about, as you log in via the Facebook Connect button, which essentially means that Facebook provides a token to the MyFitnessPal app and with that token you then get access to the app.
It is not known who is behind the hack. Under Armour has launched an investigation into how this incident occurred and how it can be prevented in the future. Furthermore, the advice is not to click on the links in the MyFitnessPal emails as they do not contain any links.
The advice for all users is to change the password for MyFitnessPal immediately.
