To eat as naturally as possible, I also make my own sauces. With this freshly made tomato sauce, you can go in any direction. You can use this sauce perfectly as a base for a pasta dish but also with stuffed peppers and various fish dishes or make a delicious soup out of it. My goal was to create a healthy sauce that doesn’t need to simmer for hours to develop its flavor. Making fresh sauce is delicious but it shouldn’t take too much time. This sauce is ready in a maximum of 20 minutes. And it’s still a great basic skill to know how to make your own fresh tomato sauce!
Ingredients Homemade Tomato Sauce
- 4 finely chopped (Roma) tomatoes
- 1 can diced tomatoes (400 gr)
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 onion
- 1 punnet mushrooms
- 2 cloves garlic
- 2-3 tbsp fresh basil (optional; add dried oregano)
- pepper and salt
- optional; half red chili pepper
- 1 grated carrot
Preparation Homemade Tomato Sauce
- Heat the oil in a deep pan and sauté the onions, mushrooms, and garlic
- Add the finely chopped tomatoes, diced tomatoes, and tomato paste
- Add the desired herbs and a grated carrot (enhances the flavor)
- Heat the sauce for a few minutes over medium heat, add water if needed to get the desired texture
- Let the sauce simmer gently for another 10 minutes.
- When the sauce is ready, then add the chopped basil
Tip! Add a red bell pepper for variation!
Tip! Making pasta? Add some cottage cheese to your sauce before serving. This makes the sauce creamier in taste.
