Treating Excessive Sweating

Geschatte leestijd: 3 minuten What is your morning ritual for a fresh feeling? You step into the shower, spray (a little too much) deodorant under each armpit, and you smell like flowers all day. Many people would kill for this simple ritual. They suffer from excessive sweating. Fortunately, excessive sweating can be treated in various ways. No super dry, clean comfort, fresh active deodorant can compete with that.

Sweating

Everyone sweats, and that’s a good thing. Did you know that your body has three to five million sweat glands? When you engage in intense exercise, eat spicy food, get a big scare, or feel angry, your body temperature rises. To dissipate heat, you start to sweat. Your skin cools down through the evaporation of sweat. If you vigorously exercise or workout in a hot room, you can produce up to one and a half liters of sweat per hour. So sweating is a normal bodily function, but it doesn’t work as it should for everyone.

Hyperhidrosis

Many people struggle with excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis. This means you don’t just sweat during heavy exertion, but throughout the day. This can have a significant impact on daily life. You are constantly busy checking for sweat stains, you always carry multiple clothing items with you, and you are often tempted to buy a new type of deodorant. In social situations, you feel insecure because you’re afraid people will notice you’re sweating. You prefer not to shake hands with others and keep your distance. You avoid exercising at the gym because you know you’ll sweat a lot. Excessive sweating can be hereditary or caused by psychological factors. It usually occurs in the armpits, face, palms, and feet, but it can also occur all over the body. In the latter case, the cause is usually an underlying problem, such as obesity, menopause, or an overactive thyroid. It’s wise to see a doctor to determine if you indeed have hyperhidrosis and what the cause is.

Treating excessive sweating with Botox

Fortunately, hyperhidrosis can be effectively treated with Botox injections. Small amounts of Botox (Botulinum Toxin) are injected into the areas where you sweat a lot. This is done with very fine needles. It stops the nerve signals from reaching the sweat glands. The gland then produces much less sweat temporarily. You’ll notice a difference after two weeks, but the optimal result is achieved after three to four weeks. The effect lasts for about six months to eight months. After that, you can repeat the treatment. Following a follow-up treatment, you often enjoy the effect for a longer period. The injection is not painful and is performed without anesthesia. It’s possible that the skin may become swollen or red or blue afterwards, but this usually subsides quickly. The treatment carries no risks. Botulinum Toxin has been extensively studied for many years and has been registered as an official medication for thirty years. Botox for excessive sweating is therefore a fine treatment.

Iontophoresis

During this treatment, your feet and hands are immersed in water while an electric charge passes through it. This takes about twenty minutes and must be performed three times a week until excessive sweating stops. Often, after some time, you can start using your own equipment at home.

How can you treat excessive sweating yourself?

You can also do a few things yourself to treat excessive sweating.
  • Wear airy clothing under the armpits and in the groin area, and wear open shoes.
  • Ensure good ventilation in the house and keep the ambient temperature cool.
  • Avoid stress, highly spiced foods, and other foods that trigger a strong reaction.
  • Use special moisture-absorbing pads on areas where you sweat a lot. This prevents sweat stains and discoloration of your clothing.
  • Your doctor can prescribe a lotion or cream containing aluminum salts. You can also try zinc oil ortalcum powder.
  • Wear special dri-fit clothing during exercise. The material of this clothing quickly wicks moisture away from the skin, keeping you dry.
Success! And don’t sweat!
